Every autumn, on the first cold night after the last apples are picked, a little crew of kitties wanders out from between the orchard rows. Nobody knows exactly where they come from. They just appear in the fallen leaves, six of them, warm and sleepy, waiting for someone to carry them home.
Persimmon is always the last to arrive. She takes the long way around, stops to sniff every fallen apple, watches the clouds, and never once hurries. The others used to wonder if she'd gotten lost. She never has. She just likes to see everything on the way.
But Persimmon never shows up empty-pawed. She always brings something to share: a perfect red leaf, a warm spot in the sun she found on her walk, a little bit of quiet when everyone else is too loud. Somehow, it's always exactly what someone needed. The little hedgehog on her belly is her oldest friend, the only one who has ever walked as slowly as she does, and the two of them have never been in a rush to be anywhere but together.
Persimmon is for the gentle souls, the slow-and-steady ones, and the people who show love by showing up.
